Massachusetts Innovation Pathways

Atlantis Charter School’s Career Academies provide students with a powerful, hands-on pathway to explore real industries, build professional skills, and graduate with a clear plan for life after high school.

Beginning in Grade 9, students take part in structured career exploration, and by sophomore year, they enter one of five specialized academies aligned to high-demand fields in Massachusetts.

College & Career Alignment

Every career academy is aligned with high-demand industries in the state economy. Coursework supports:

  • College readiness: academic skills, AP course alignment, and MyCAP planning

  • Career readiness: certifications (when available), technical competencies, and employability skills

  • Postsecondary exploration: exposure to job roles, degree pathways, and industry expectations

Career Exploration

All freshmen take Career Academy I, a full-year course that introduces them to each of the five academies and the wide range of careers they lead to. Students research occupations, participate in project-based learning, develop soft skills, and engage in hands-on mini-experiences that help them understand their strengths and interests. They also begin building their MyCAP (My Career & Academic Plan)—a multi-year planning tool used across high school.

Throughout Grade 9, students meet Academy instructors, explore real-world tasks from each career field, and reflect on their experiences to prepare for academy selection.

Selecting Academies

Students are introduced to Atlantis Career Academies through classroom activities, guest speakers, hands-on experiences, and career awareness events. This exploration helps students learn about different industries, pathways, and future opportunities before making a selection.

Students meet with their guidance counselor to review academic strengths, interests, and long-term goals. Counselors help students understand academy expectations, course pathways, and how each academy aligns with postsecondary plans.

Students complete reflection activities that encourage them to think critically about their interests, skills, and career goals. These assignments help students make intentional, informed choices rather than selecting an academy at random.

Teachers provide insight into each student’s strengths, work habits, and readiness for specific academy pathways. This feedback supports students in choosing an academy where they are most likely to thrive and grow.

Families are encouraged to discuss academy options with their student at home. These conversations ensure that selections are made collaboratively, with family input and a shared understanding of the student’s goals and interests.

The Career Academy selection process is designed to be thoughtful, supportive, and student-centered—helping each learner choose a pathway that fits their interests, strengths, and future goals.
