Achieving Tech Equity

Ensuring all students have equal access to the technology necessary to succeed in the current remote learning environment has been a primary concern for educators across the country. Atlantis has made good use of the resources at its disposal to set up students and staff for at-home learning, but additional resources will be necessary for long-term success with remote learning. Prior to school closures, Atlantis surveyed students and found that approximately 90 percent reported having access to a device (computer, laptop, tablet, phone, etc.) at home. However, the number of families that needed a school Chromebook was much higher when you [...]

Remote learning during a pandemic

Keeping students engaged and learning presents many challenges during the coronavirus pandemic. It is important not to let students fall through the cracks, and so, here at Atlantis, we are taking a very deliberate approach to remote learning. First, we made sure all families could access remote learning, which meant having “paper and pencil” resources. Next, we worked to fill in gaps in resources by providing school Chromebooks to families and connecting families to internet service providers that are offering support to low-income families. As we ramped up our remote learning, we began to use our existing online education tools in addition [...]

Atlantis Career Academy Expo

Diane Richard, RN, Health & Medicine Academy Instructor, speaks with students about what they can expect to explore in this interactive Career Academy. The school year is flying by. We’re already two months into 2020, and summer will be here before we know it. Some big decisions lie ahead for many of our students, particularly for our 8th and 10th graders. The 8th graders are deciding where they will attend high school and the 10th graders will soon choose a Career Academy.  To help them make informed decisions, we took our 8th and 10th graders to UMass Dartmouth’s Center [...]

Strong winter sports season

The winter sports season has come to an end at Atlantis, and it was a great one for both the boys and girls varsity basketball teams. The girls’ varsity team showed great improvement over last season, finishing this season with a 6-7 record, one win shy of making the state tournament. “Our girls remembered a lot of the principles we implemented during the 2018-2019 season,” said Coach Nathan Mello. “We hope to continue to build a program based on discipline and dedication. Next season we will be excited to continue to build on our success from this season.” Coach Mello credits [...]

Seniors Begin Spring Internships

At Atlantis, we place a strong emphasis on providing our students with experiential learning opportunities to help them make informed decisions about the careers they want to pursue after graduation.  That’s why we are committed to having a robust internship program. Career Academy Director Pat Hawkridge has spent much of the school year arranging capstone internship experiences for seniors. Those internships began this month with some new and exciting changes. “The seniors in the Teaching and Social Services Academy are working with classroom teachers and an occupational therapist at the Lower School as they have in past years, but the internships [...]
