Boys Varsity Soccer Competes in Division 4 South Finals
From Day 1, it was apparent to the coaches that this team was something special. The ACS Boys Varsity Soccer Team was the definition of Triton Tough – they worked hard and played harder this fall, making it all the way to the Division 4 South Sectional Finals in their first Varsity season.
Atlantis faced off against Cohasset High School in the finals on Saturday, November 16 in Holbrook. Cohasset was looking for its fourth consecutive Division 4 South title. Atlantis was looking for its first in school history. The Tritons played to win, but despite a strong effort by all of the players, Cohasset took the title. Mason Branco kicked the sole goal of the game for Atlantis, making the final score 4 to 1. (See the photo gallery from the game on Wicked Local Cohasset!)
“We could not be prouder of our team and the efforts of our players,” said Athletic Director Chad Gormly. “They were Triton Tough every step of the way through the playoffs and put Atlantis soccer on the map. As I watched the finals, I was especially proud of our three seniors Alex Amaral, Felipe DeSouza, and Johnathan Turcios-Serrano. Any time one of those seniors was on the field, they hustled like no other. I extend my congratulations to Head Coach Nathan Mello and Coach Hank Madeira for putting together a great team, and for having a great season.”
Coach Mello said the season was no doubt a success. “Having a talented and dedicated group of boys made the ascent into the Varsity ranks an easy transition. Each challenge we faced, the team met it head-on and was willing to make the adjustments necessary to succeed as the season went on.”
Mello hopes this year’s success will continue next season and for years to come.
The Tritons aren’t putting away their cleats just yet. Six players from the team were invited to play in the first annual South Coast Fall Classic which will feature top talent from six local high schools. The game will be held on Tuesday November 26th at Diman High School starting at 6pm.
Another first for ACS Volleyball
The girls Varsity Volleyball team also made school history this year becoming Atlantis’s first Varsity Volleyball team to reach the playoffs. This achievement was three years in the making as Coaches Greg Medeiros and Richard Medeiros built a volleyball program from scratch. Each year the team made improvements and made it all the way through to the playoffs this year. Both coaches feel that the team has the ability to go even further in future seasons.
“Reaching the playoffs was our goal this year,” said Gormly. “The next step will be to make it to Round 2 next year. We have a tremendous group of athletes, so I believe that goal is possible if our players work hard and are dedicated to that goal.”
This year’s team standouts included Alyssa Frias, Kaitlyn Brown, and Lauren Martins who were the top servers, Tanea Jackson and Nicole Preis led the team in blocks at the net. But each match, every player walked on the court the intent to win – and it’s that attitude and dedication that continues to push the program up to new levels.
