A New Home for Inspired Learning
Atlantis Charter School’s new 98,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art campus along South Watuppa Pond will serve as the school’s new home for inspired learning for more than 1,400 students in Kindergarten through 12th grade, allowing Atlantis to advance its mission to provide students with an education second to none.
The 43-acre campus is unlike any other public charter school campus in Massachusetts. The $35 million complex features two wings of large, open concept classrooms equipped with cutting-edge technology, a gymnasium, a waterfront track and field complex, as well as lots of open space. The new facility will also house Atlantis’s innovative career academies, which provide a new model of education designed to help bridge the skills gap and prepare students for successful 21st century careers.
Why A New Campus?
For more than 20 years Atlantis used its operating income to lease older, repurposed buildings that do not provide all of the needed resources and amenities for students, such as a gymnasium or athletic field. Most of the classrooms in these buildings are significantly smaller than traditional standards. Some are in stagnant basements with no walls to properly separate workspaces, or windows to fill the rooms with natural sunlight. What’s more, utility expenses for inefficient heating and cooling pull money away from student instruction.
Despite the poor conditions of current facilities, Atlantis Charter School still ranks among the highest-performing charter schools in the Commonwealth. The new campus will enable Atlantis to improve on that success by putting students in an optimized learning environment where their minds can thrive and they can meet their full learning potential.
How is the New School Being Funded?
Though charter schools are public schools, they are not eligible for public school construction subsidies.
After decades of strong fiscal management, Atlantis was able to finance the construction of the new $35 million campus. We are now in the midst of a capital campaign to raise $2.5 million to accelerate the payment of facilities debt and allow the school to contribute more of its operation income to student programming.
